Strolling along the shops and through the richly coloured parks, warming up in a coffee place, watching the students pass by, booking a hotel for a quiet night: that’s an autumn weekend in Ghent in a nutshell. A visit with your children during the autumn half-term holiday is a very good idea too. Enjoy the cosiness and be tempted by all that is warm, delicious and beautiful.

Walking in and around Ghent

Autumn is the perfect season for a walk, isn't it? That’s true for Ghent as well. You can explore the city centre on foot, for example doing a Walk Local tour or our own Light Plan walk. Ghent’s monuments and streets are illuminated in a well-thought-out and charming way, every evening until midnight. Do you prefer a green area? In Ghent you will find all the parks and nature reserves you could wish for – Gentbrugse Meersen, Bourgoyen etc.

Warming up in between walks

Would you like to taste a good coffee or afternoon tea in Ghent? Autumn is the ideal season to enjoy something sweet with a hot drink, in between all the walking or the shopping. You can also catch your breath or warm up in one of our museums and learn something at the same time. What about breakfast in the centre of Ghent? Plenty of choice.  Or a candlelit dinner? The possibilities are endless. We also love an aperitif on a heated terrace.

Even more beautiful in autumn

Maybe it’s obvious that autumn is our favourite season for a city break in Ghent? That’s because some of the city’s most beautiful spots are even more spectacular during that season. In autumn the most beautiful cemetery in Ghent, Campo Santo, radiates melancholia. The sights and sounds of Citadelpark are even more attractive and the beguinages even more peaceful than usual.

Autumn shopping

In the countless lovely boutiques you will definitely find a new, warm wardrobe. Choose a shopping area that fits your style and explore the latest fashion trends. By the way, a dry autumn day is ideal for buying antiques or books on one of the markets in Ghent. What are you waiting for?

Activities for children

The autumn half-term holiday is the perfect moment to visit our city with your children. Actually, every single autumn weekend is ideal for our range of activities you can do with your kids. The Castle of the Counts is even more fun in autumn, when it’s wrapped in a mysterious mist. The World of Kina helps you discover nature on a rainy day and the Graffiti Street seems to turn into a new masterpiece every day.

Accommodation in Ghent

As you have probably noticed: there is enough to do in Ghent to fill a weekend. Time for action: book a room at a hotel in Ghent or in a B&B in or around the city. Take your time to look around at your own pace and to find a place that you can call 'home'.
