Illuminate your winter break with a trip to Lightopia

Illuminate your winter break with a trip to Lightopia

I don’t know about you, but I just LOVE this time of year with its dark days and chilly nights. I feel especially lucky living in Gent which, as a top tourist destination, pretty much guarantees that there’ll be some event or other adding a much needed dose of sparkle in the run up to Christmas.

This year, the task falls on the Design museum Gent, which recently opened its elegant, and thought provoking Lightopia exhibition, a must see for all the family. I’ve been along twice so far and will definitely go again, it runs until March 2015 so there’s still time, and well worth the visit.

Moodily lit corridor

I love the way you enter the exhibition via the museum’s classic curation and then walk along a moodily lit corridor, which is in fact a precursor to the spectacular main event. I can’t describe it all here, but the stunningly lit mood room, as I call it, is definitely the highlight of the show, and made the event extra special for me, it was so ridiculously calming and pretty I could have stayed there all day!

The staff are on hand to answer any questions and I’d highly recommend talking to them, as they’ll be able to explain the story behind the theatrics. They’re also keen to get feedback, so everyone greets you with a smile which adds to a wonderfully relaxing vibe.

Exquisite backdrop

If going as a couple, I’d recommend visiting later in the day when it starts to get dark. The gloom outside provides an exquisite backdrop, and when you’re done you can take a leisurely stroll to any number of cosily inviting eateries waiting outside for a quiet drink or an evening meal.

Wherever you’re travelling from, there are as usual a number of buses and trams that will whisk you into the vicinity. I live not too far from the Zuid and find it easy to walk from there.
However you travel, remember to grab your CityCard from www.visitgent.be for free travel and entry to many other events. Also for further details on Lightopia visit www.visitgent.be
