For the Van Eyck year “OMG! Van Eyck was here” and the programme “Iedereen Beroemd” on the Flemish TV station Één, twelve artists or artist duos created a modern version of the Ghent Altarpiece. The producers of Iedereen Beroemd followed the artists during the creative process.
Until Christmas Day, the modern version will be projected on the historic Cloth Hall every evening, panel by panel. And just like an Advent calendar, a panel will be added every other day. Finally, passers-by will be able to admire the entire modern version of the altarpiece on Christmas Eve and Christmas day.
The modern version of the Ghent Altarpiece, an initiative of Cultuur Gent and the Flemish public broadcasting organisation VRT, combines various disciplines, from painting to sculpture and photography. Like Herr Seele, Marijs Boulogne, Tom Liekens, Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven, Karel Hadermann, Chrostin and Benoît Van Innis , Ghent artists Ben Benaouisse, Paulien Verhaest (Blommm) & Ceepil, Jan Matthys, Flexboj & L.A and Patsy Van Damme were inspired by the world-famous work by Jan van Eyck.
