In 1977, Monique Gies left her family and comfortable life behind and fled to Paris, where she spent a year creating some one hundred paintings depicting empty interiors, a rocking horse with a white shirt on top and, above all, dolls. These dolls had no head, no limbs or were shown inside strange wooden structures or enclosed in a bag or bottle.
