For decades, the sound of looms filled the air in West Flanders. Weaving mills were a common sight in many West Flemish towns. This exhibition introduces you to a world of flying shuttles, (cottage) weavers, cardboard cutters and spool holders!

Over the past 80 years, South West Flanders has grown into the place to be for the production of carpets, upholstery, velvet, faux fur and artificial grass, also called ‘pile textile’. Extra yarn, the pile yarn, is woven into the fabric. This way small loops are created, which are sometimes cut open to create a different effect. The 'pile textile’ was made in large factories, but also in warehouses and sheds of small entrepreneurs. The workers and their families are often closely connected, far beyond the weaving mill.

“Tapijtsgeest” is a travelling exhibition consisting of 15 display boxes. They will take you back to the heyday of the carpet industry in that region. Choose a box, stimulate your senses and discover.
