Dirk Castelein is an East Flemish artist. He studied at the academy of Deinze and KASK School of Arts Ghent. He took a break from painting between 1982 and 1990, which was an important period for new creations. Since 1992 he has created spatial work as well.
The exhibition in Zebrastraat concentrates on a collection of his works made between 2015 and 2020. To the painter it is important that his works speak for themselves. Castelein does not make paintings that require an explanation. He thinks it is interesting to provoke or hold up a mirror to the spectator. According to him, an artist does not always need to be able to explain what he does.
