New boutique hotel in the heart of Ghent16 Aug 2017
Do you like staying at luxurious boutique hotels in exclusive locations? Then we’ve got some good news for you! Hotel ‘1898 The Post’ has just opened its doors at the former post-office building at Korenmarkt. It boasts 38 stylishly decorated rooms and suites, and is aimed specifically at families, tourists and business travellers. If you are looking to pamper yourself with a truly unique experience, book the tower suite, which boasts a spectacular panoramic view of the city.
The name of the hotel, ‘1898 The Post’, is no coincidence. This brand-new hotel owned by the international group Zannier Hotels is housed in Ghent’s former post-office building, located between Korenmarkt and Graslei. This was once a busy junction of access roads into the city, where postilions and horse-drawn trams would pass through. 1898 refers to the year when construction started.
The building in neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance style was erected for the 1913 World’s Fair. The result is a true gem, with octagonal towers, stepped gables and an impressive 52-metre clock tower.
Luxurious accommodation along the water
The former post-office building has been restored to its former glory, making it a grand meeting space. After sitting empty for a while, last year it welcomed a shopping centre, a supermarket and a breakfast eatery on the ground floor. And from now on, the top floor hosts ‘1898 The Post’.
The owners gave the rooms inspiring names, such as The Envelope, The Letter and The Postcard, all reminiscent of the building’s past. The 38 classic and luxuriously decorated rooms have the intimate feel of a boutique hotel, in the lively heart of Ghent. You enter the hotel via Graslei, considered the most beautiful spot in the city by many inhabitants of Ghent. You can book the suite in the clock tower to enjoy a spectacular view of the entire city. The hotel targets not only foreign tourists, but also business travellers, families and residents. There is a meeting room that can host up to 10 persons and you can enjoy an afternoon tea or a cocktail with a view of Graslei at cocktail bar The Cobbler.
