One of the three authentic beguinages in Ghent. Though it is no longer walled and thus became part of the city, it still has a unique atmosphere. It is now more than ever a place of religious tolerance since it has three different churches: Roman Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant.
The new Orthodox church in Sophie Van Akenstraat is well worth a visit. The interior of the church has been decorated with frescos in accordance with authentic Byzantine techniques. The facade depicts the twelve Apostles on mosaics in arched niches.
If you are a fan of this colourful facade art, you will find another wonderful mosaic on the facade of the Royal Dutch Theatre on Sint-Baafsplein. This features Apollo, the Roman god of music and joy, with his muses of singing, dancing and music.
