More than 10,000 different plant species in the tropical and subtropical greenhouses of the University Botanical Garden are in bloom and appealing to all. Get to know special plants, learn more about plants and their relationship with humans or simply enjoy a leisurely stroll in a beautiful setting.
Over the past 220 years, the Botanical Garden has become a unique and valuable place for research, inspiration and tranquillity. From 2020 on, the Botanical Garden and the GUM (Ghent University Museum) will join forces a stone's throw from Ghent-Sint-Pieters station and the Citadel Park. The Botanical Garden and the GUM will join the future Museumplein together with the art museums S.M.A.K. and MSK Ghent.
From the Botanical Garden, you have a full view of the work created by street artist ROA on the façade of the Ghent University Museum.
Get lost in more than 4000m² of greenhouses
With a surface area of 27,500m², the Ghent Botanical al Garden offers a safe haven for more than 10,000 plant species from all over the world. From flowers to edible plants and medicinal herbs, you'll find them all on this beautiful domain. In addition to a large outdoor garden including an arboretum, a rock garden and a Mediterranean garden, you will also find heated and unheated greenhouses in the Botanical Garden.
The indoor and outdoor ponds are not only public favourites. They are also the perfect place for growing and researching many types of aquatic plants. Every day the Botanical al Garden looks different. You see, feel and smell the coming and going of the seasons.

The Ghent Botanical Garden is part of the renowned educational institution "Ghent University". This explains the presence of many students in the greenhouses or the arboretum. In addition to the special living collections, a herbarium collection (dried plants, fruits and mushrooms) and a seminary (seed bank) are also kept and managed here. In addition, the Botanical Garden is also a favourite study spot for many students.
Imagine yourself in the tropics
Explore the different climatic zones. Admire the giant water lilies in the Victoria Greenhouse or discover various well-known utensils such as coffee, cocoa, papaya and rice. Sense the aroma of citrus flowers in the Subtropical Greenhouse and enjoy the Mediterranean climate. With any luck you may even see bananas ripening there! Peek up to the African baobab in the Tropical Greenhouse and take a breather in the Succulent Greenhouse, the ideal biotope of succulents and cacti.

The entrance is at the corner of K.L. Ledeganckstraat and E. Clauslaan.
As a wheelchair user you can easily visit the Victoria Greenhouse, the Subtropical Greenhouse, the Succulent Greenhouse and large parts of the garden. For a visit to the Tropical Greenhouse it is best to contact the hortulana in advance.
Every first Sunday of the month there is a free guided tour at 10 am for individual visitors, except in December and January. Registration in advance is not required.
