About Painting – Early Work

© Gerhard Richter

Gerhard Richter is among the most influential of today’s artists and is often thought of as an innovator in post-war painting.

The exhibition traces a specific choice of motifs from the artist’s early work, in which the analysis of the potential of visual reproduction and perception, that became a constant in his oeuvre, can already be discerned.

Richter analysed the traditional painting genres (still life, portrait, landscape), the visual idiom of modern painting (e.g. monochromy, abstraction, grids etc.) and the challenges for the medium in our digital culture. He broadened the concept of painting in dialogue with other disciplines such as photography and sculpture. The exhibition follows a distinct choice of motifs from the artist’s early work, where the analysis of the possibilities of visual representation and perception that were to remain a constant in his oeuvre were already tangible.

Eight previously unseen works

The addition of eight previously unseen paintings which come directly from the artist's studio is a highly unusual touch. The colourful works have been painted over numerous times and can be regarded as abstract landscapes.
