Beguinages in Ghent
Find peace and quiet in the charming narrow streets
Beguinages came into existence in the 13th century and were meant for women who wanted to lead a devout life “together in isolation” without taking monastic vows. The individual and shared houses were often constructed near a church and were surrounded by a wall that had one or several entrance gates. Ghent features no less than three beguinages, two of which have been included in the list of UNESCO world heritage sites.
