They explore questions such as: "Do borders create order in chaos, or the illusion of stability?"; "Is a border something to cross, or that stops, protects or traps you?" and "Are they created naturally or man-made?" In this exhibition, you can explore the results of their research through a variety of objects from the rich academic patrimony, supplemented by works from public and private collections. Input ranges from ancient artefacts to contemporary research tools from disciplines as diverse as biology, archaeology and more.
On the intersection of art and science
Five artists and duos have created new work inspired by 'BORDERS', each exploring the line between guarding and crossing.
The projects by photographer Bieke Depoorter bear witness to the intimate and collaborative approach with which she questions the relationship between photographer and subject. They highlight how trust and shared narratives shape photography. These themes are reflected in the work she created for 'BORDERS'.
The Ghent-based duo Robbert & Frank, Frank & Robbert made new installations in the context of 'BORDERS' about frontiers, portals, and gatekeepers, which you can view in the garden and greenhouses.
The interactive installations by the art collective playField, consisting of Marthe and Lana Schneider, reflect their fondness for society and human behaviour. They created a diorama representing a liminal space for this exhibition at the Ghent University Museum (GUM).
Lana Schneider also created a large mural in which she delves into the aesthetic element of scientific graphs featured in the exhibition.
Brazilian writer, theatre maker and performer Luanda Casella lives and works in Ghent. Her work explores everyday communication and its influence on our perception of the world. Noir Performance, the work she created for the Borders exhibition, displays some strikingly powerful quotes and phrases in the museum and the city.
