The Leopoldskazerne Barracks is more than a new district in the city – it's a vibrant ecosystem where living, working and relaxing blend seamlessly together.

Military history

The Leopoldskazerne barracks is located in the Arts Quarter. It was built in the beginning of the 20th century. It was the home of the second Line Regiment and its more than 1,300 soldiers, except during the First and Second World War. They left the building in 1955, and afterwards it housed the Health Care Centre, which at the time served as a training centre for officers and stretcher bearers.

The work to repurpose the site originally got under way in 2019 and will finally be completed by the end of 2025. The complex that is grouped around the central square Paradeplein not only contains a new Provincial Government Building, but also homes, apartments and a hotel.

A trendy hotel in a historic setting

On Gaspar De Crayerstraat, a stylish hotel is under construction that epitomises the rich history of the Leopoldskazerne Barracks. While paying homage to the historical architecture, the hotel combines the comforts of today with an atmosphere that's truly unique.

The Provincial Government Building

The new Provincial Government Building is more than an administrative centre; it is a space that is open and accessible for everyone. With its restaurant serving local produce and its auditorium, meeting rooms and a training centre, it's the ideal place to gather and to network. Located on Provincieplein, with its pleasant and cosy surroundings, spending some time there and enjoying the sun is an inviting prospect!
