Griet Aesaert started working as an architect at Gigon-Guyer in Zürich in 2009. She lived next to a leather shop where she occasionally bought leather scraps. She used them to try things out and got a taste for sewing and creating. When she returned to Belgium, she continued her work as an architect and enrolled in a training in leather craft.

Griet opened her own studio where she started making handbags. Since then, AESAERT has become the handbag label for durable, timeless pieces. Griet still makes a large part of the bags herself in her studio, but she also has a small production team so she can keep up with demand.
