Historical waterway between Ghent and Bruges
In the 18th and 19th centuries, Coupure was a busy commercial canal that linked Ghent to Bruges. When the first town houses were built along the shore, the workers were banished (until the beginning of the 20th century, when they were literally expelled). Nowadays the shores are plane-lined.
