In the visitors' centre of St Bavo's Cathedral, you can admire the restored panels of the Ghent Altarpiece as well as various other authentic art treasures in all their glory.
Thanks to augmented reality glasses, you will be able to travel back to the distant past in the cathedral’s crypt and be witness to the tumultuous history of the Ghent Altarpiece and the cathedral as if you were there. Both the masterpiece and the imposing building are brought to life down to the smallest detail. Come and experience the supreme mystery!
Tip: combine with a visit to the Museum of Fine Arts (MSK) and follow the restoration of the upper register of the retable’s interior panels live. From Tuesdays to Fridays, you can see the restorers live at work in their workshop. Moreover, on weekends and holidays, the panels are set up in such a way that they are visible to the public.
The Ghent Altarpiece with children
Families with children can go on a family tour of the visitors’ centre. This audio tour is available in Dutch, French and English and is suitable for children aged 6 and over. This is a playful way to learn more about the Ghent Altarpiece and its history.
Massive discounts with the CityCard
CityCard holders can enjoy a considerable discount by selecting the ‘CityCard' option when purchasing a ticket. You can even do this before you have actually bought your CityCard. This way, you are sure you have a ticket. When you get to the entrance, have both your ticket and CityCard scanned.
Note: CityCard holders must always make reservations beforehand. The reduced rate will not be granted for tickets purchased at the box office.

Opening hours
The upper register of the inner panels of the retable is currently restored. From Tuesdays to Fridays, you can see the restorers live at work in the Museum of Fine Arts. On weekends and holidays, the panels are set up in such a way that they are visible to the public.
You can admire both the open and closed panels of the altarpiece during the first and last time slot.
A tablet is available for those who are unable to wear AR glasses.
The cathedral, the new visitors' centre and the Ghent Altarpiece are fully wheelchair accessible.
