If you spend a weekend in Ghent, you’ll notice that Ghentians care a lot about the environment and try to make their city a greener place. Cyclists are the principal road users, climbing plants and façade gardens embellish Ghent’s neighbourhoods, and there are packaging-free shops as well as lots of vegan and vegetarian eating places. A low ecological footprint is a priority, including for the many businesses and tourist attractions in the city. So Ghent deserves to be called a green pioneer.
