Veldstraat is primarily known as Ghent’s shopping heart that can get really busy at the weekend. But did you know that two majestic city palaces are located across from each other in this street and that you can visit them? They’re the ideal break from all that shopping…

Veldstraat’s city palaces were once the glorious homes of the noble families d'Hane Steenhuyse and Vander Haegen. When you enter the colourful drawing rooms with lavish furniture, fascinating wallpaper and grand murals you can see their love for bling immediately.

Hotel d’Hane Steenhuyse has a phenomenal courtyard and has welcomed tsars, princes and kings over the centuries.

The equally spectacular Arnold Vander Haegen House was left to the City of Ghent, on the condition that is was used as a museum. Mission accomplished, and now you can discover the house for yourself.

Golden tipCityCard holders can join the guided tours of the city palaces free of charge if they have registered online in advance. Register here for the tour (with or without a CityCard Gent). The tours are held in Dutch, but depending on the nationalities in the group, they can also be held in French or in English.
