Ghent is a city for everyone, including visitors with impaired vision or hearing. Two walking guides have been developed for these visitors with tactile panels: one with audio descriptions and one with videos in Flemish sign language, each of which can be accessed via your smartphone.

The best of Ghent's attractions for everyone

Basic walk: 2 km – 2900 steps, extendable to 3 km

Seven sights have been selected for the accessible walking tours in the historic centre, good for a trip that takes in the highlights: the Castle of the Counts, the three towers of Ghent – St Nicholas' Church, the Belfry and St Bavo's Cathedral, – De Krook library, the monument to the Van Eyck brothers, the Town Hall, the graffiti alley and the statue of Jacob van Artevelde. The tour is mapped out in such a way that obstacles are reduced to a minimum.

The images of the various sights are embossed so that persons with sensory impairments can 'feel' them.

So what makes the new walking guides 'accessible'?

First of all, the photographs of the sights in the guides are embossed, allowing people with sensory impairments to 'feel' what is in the image. In addition, the guide is supplemented with audio descriptions (for people who have difficulty reading) or with videos in sign language (for people who have difficulty hearing). These extras can be accessed via a smartphone. You can also read or hear each time the route to the next place.

The walking guide also gives access to audio descriptions and videos with sign language.
