Ghent, where to start? One of my favourite spots in the city centre is the Kalandeberg in the SoGo shopping district: grab a coffee on a terrace and if you're lucky, a busker will be playing while you enjoy watching all the people passing by around you.

I also enjoy going shopping in that very neighbourhood. Can't resist, because I never come out empty-handed. For something sweet on the go, such as a smoothie, head to Veldstraat or Korenmarkt. On the Donkersteeg, you'll find hands down the best iced coffee in Ghent. Thank me later.

Another place you've simply got to visit is the Design Museum: the permanent collection is a must-see, but there is also always an unmissable exhibition going on. For something that's a bit more out of the box for those who can't sit still, Ghent not only offers a range of activities that will give you a chance to engage your muscles and skyrocket your adrenaline levels, but also a good many other activities that will actually calm your body and mind.

For a top-notch dinner, people will always choose one of the starred establishments, but the city is also home to quite a large number of top spots belonging to individual chefs that are at the top their game! Apero o'clock is on the Oude Beestenmarkt. Or even better, rent a boat – you've guessed it – along the Coupure and have your own aperitif on the water. If you're spending more than a day in Ghent, you can stay overnight at one of the many hotels or B&B’s. Still got some time on your hands? Then head to the Gentbrugse Meersen and take a walk in the greenery. A perfect detox day!
